EU Might Respond to ‘Unjustified’ US Travel Restrictions, Official States

The European Union might “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it calls “unjustified” visa bans issued by the United States on five European individuals working on fighting digital hatred and disinformation, an EU official has said.

European Leaders Decry US Action as ‘Coercion’

Officials from Europe including the French president charged the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, following the visa restrictions were placed on figures who have been at the heart of campaigns to introduce legislation governing US-based technology firms.

“For too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to coerce American platforms to punish American viewpoints they oppose,” wrote a senior US official in a social media post. “This government will not stand for such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”

Broad Criticism From EU Nations

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives joined the French president in criticizing the move.

The bans were enacted on Tuesday on a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s digital governance law, along with several activists fighting false information, including Germany and the United Kingdom.

An Escalating Conflict Regarding Governance

The DSA is seen by US officials as a type of speech restriction, whereas EU authorities argue the rules are necessary to combat inflammatory language and falsehoods.

This disagreement threatens to become a facet of a much broader existing cultural and political conflict between the current US administration and European institutions.
